J/29 North American Championship

Sailing under the SIYC burgee, sailors Fredrik Salvesen and Rich Hoyer won the 2001 J/29 North American Championship, the first North American Championship for the class since 1994. Nineteen boats took part in the regatta, racing in cold 25-30 knot breezes for the better part of the three day event at Solomon's Island, MD. Hoyer's and Salvesen's Jeopardy took the title with a record of 1-3-1-4-12-6-7-3 for a total of 37 points.

Salvesen was the defending champion after winning the 1994 North Americans at the helm of Mirage. Salvesen re-entered the J/29 class this year after a five year hiatus with a 50% purchase of Hoyer's J/29, Jeopardy.

The crew on Jeopardy were helmsman Rich Hoyer and his wife Lisa Simpkins, who trimmed spinnaker, co-skipper Fredrik Salvesen, who trimmed headsails, Max Skelley (tactician), Jordan Smith (trimmer), Jean McCutcheon (pit), Kate Meek (bow) and Cedric Lewis, the son of SIYC member David Lewis, (foredeck) . Skelley is also a past J/29 North American champion, having won the 1989 event at the helm of Banzai.
